Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy
If you’re unsure whether or not you need root canal treatment, we’ve made a list of some of the most common signs and symptoms associated with an infected or damaged canal. However, we won’t know for sure if a root canal is right for you until you visit our office for a consultation with Dr. Sharp.
- Abscess (pimple-like bump) on gums
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Consistent bitter or salty taste in mouth
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swollen, sensitive gums
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and/or cold
- Tooth pain (dull ache to sharp pain)
If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms above, we strongly encourage you to get in touch with our office so we can schedule an appointment for you right away. If left untreated, an infected tooth can lead to more serious dental problems or possibly result in tooth loss.
The Root Canal Procedure
Before we begin your procedure, we’ll numb the area (so the most you’ll feel is slight pressure), and place a rubber dam around your tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva.
Once your tooth and the area around it is prepared, we’ll make a small opening in the crown. Through this opening, we will gently extract any infected pulp, nerve tissue, and decay. Then, we’ll disinfect the inside of your tooth and use a tooth-colored filling to fill in the space and seal the opening. For additional protection, we may also place a natural-looking dental crown over your tooth.
